We provide stainless steel TUMBLE STIR ELEMENTS which are very efficient
at stirring the contents of microwells. These stir elements
do not corrode in the presence of sodium chloride, acetic acid,
citric acid, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite. Also, they
are not affected by organic solvents such as dimethyl
sulfoxide, ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. These stir elements have been
tested and found to be non-toxic to microorganisms. The stir elements
are priced low enough to be disposable, however they can be
reclaimed, cleaned, demagnetized, autoclaved and then reused. The TUMBLE STIR ELEMENTS come
demagnetized and become magnetic and begin tumbling when placed in a moving
magnetic field. These same stir elements
can be coated with Parylene
or PTFE to
shield reactions that are
sensitive to iron ions or to prevent a caustic solution from attacking the
stainless steel.

The
tumbling action of a the VP 711D Tumble Stir Dowel in a glass vial is
illustrated in the photo on the right. As the magnetic cylinder spins the
dowel aligns its magnetic poles to the cylinders and tumbles vertically.
The dowel can spin at 500 RPM thus creating significant movement of the liquid
in the vial or microplate wells.

Our Stainless Steel TUMBLE STIR ELEMENTS are easily placed in
Microplates
using our
Dispenser Systems. Because it is possible to
demagnetize
our special type of stainless steel, you can easily load the dispensing systems
to fill the microplates. This is just not possible using permanent magnet
stirrers. The only way to get permanent magnet stirrers into microplates
is manually placing them in each well one at a time. For some
applications where stirring very viscous liquids is required this is desirable.
For these applications we also offer
Alnico and Rare Earth Magnet
Stir Bars.
TUMBLE STIR ELEMENTS are available in a variety of
sizes designed for maximum stirring efficiency of various
microplate well diameters, shapes, and liquid depth. Inquire for
the TUMBLE STIR ELEMENT that best fits your needs. TUMBLE STIR ELEMENTS are
provided in bulk packages of 1,000 each. With our
economical manual Alligator Tumble
Stirrer and our low cost stir dowels (VP 711D) every lab can afford to mix
in microplates. |

The selection of which stir element to use is based on the following
considerations:
-
Efficiency - the disc stirrers are the most efficient at stirring
(moving liquid).
-
Size - chose a stir element whose longest dimension is just
slightly smaller than the well diameter.
-
Magnetic Strength - the bar and dowel type stirrers have the
most magnetic energy and will stir wells at greater distances than the disc
type stirrers will. Of the two types of disc stirrers, the
"F" series stainless steel have the most magnetic energy.
Magnetic energy is important if you want to stack microplates on top of each
other, or if you place the microplates on a heating block on top of the
Tumble Stirrer Deck or if the material you are stirring is very viscous.
-
Cost - the bar and dowel type stirrers are the least
expensive.
-
Coating - most biological stirring can be done with the
stainless steel stir discs, bars and dowels. Coated stirrers are
recommended for combinatorial
chemistry.

The enlarged photo to the right illustrates how small some of our stir bars
are. The VP 718 is only 76 microns in diameter and 1000 microns long.
It is used by NASA to mix solutions in zero gravity micro chambers. If
you have a special need, no matter how small or how large or how far out in
space it is, we have the capability to make stir elements of any size and
shape. You might say they even circle the globe.

Parylene is an inert polymer film that makes a conformal
coating around the stirrers. Parylene coating is useful in
combinatorial chemistry where the reaction may be inhibited by Fe
ions from the stirrers. Coating with parylene further
protects
the stainless steel stirrers from corrosive effects of a wide
variety of concentrated acids and bases. Parylene is stable from
-200șC to 200șC. It is resistant to organic solvents and it
is non-toxic and bio-compatible for medical applications,
including implants. Parylene is more cost effective than PTFE however
because the parylene coating is thin it can be worn off after prolonged usage.

PTFE is the ultimate inert polymer for
encapsulating our stainless steel stir
bars. This thick
layer can't be worn away. The durability of PTFE coupled with the
corrosive resistant properties makes it a good choice. To determine
whether you should use Stainless Steel or PTFE encapsulated Stir StiX check
the Chemical Resistance Charts.
We offer PTFE coated stir elements for our most poplular
sizes. Whether you are mixing 96 well plates or vials we have a PTFE
coated stir element for you.
VP
712-2
We have added approximately 1 mm of PTFE to our standard VP 712 stir
bar so the encapsulated dimensions are 3.57 mm by 3.70 mm by 4.85 mm long. PTFE

VP 719F-2
We have encapsulated PTFE around our VP 719F stir disc
so the diameter is enlarged to 9.46 mm and the thickness is 1.45 mm.
PTFE encapsulated stir disc
We have also encapsulated the
Stir StiX series with PTFE. The encapsulated Stir StiXs range in
length from 21.8 mm, 28.2 mm to 34.6 mm long so they will accommodate a
wide variety of deep well microplates, vials or test tubes. |

The new F series (VP 719F, VP 721F, VP 722F and VP 724F) are
made using an even more magnetic stainless steel than our original VP 719, VP
721, VP 722 and VP 724. These stir discs have the advantage of being able
to mix solutions as viscous as honey or microplates stacked four high.

The following tables match a single stir element with the
vessel they were designed to stir. However you should keep in mind
that if you add multiple stir elements to one vessel they will
magnetically couple and stack to a greater height as illustrated in the

One of our customers approached us with a
problem they were having in dissolving compounds that floated on the top of the
liquid in glass vials. Being able to soluabilize new compounds is a very
basic yet essential requirement in many applications. Our solution was to develop a
Stir
StiX that
was very magnetic and taller than meniscus level in the
vial, so the surface of the liquid and the compound are
vigorously mixed as the Stir StiX moves
back and forth. These are now available in Stainless
Steel and encapsulated in PTFE.
We have also found many new stirring applications for the
Stir StiX as they produce a very vigorous stirring action in many different
vessels.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
We also offer a magnetic powder with 0.7m
diameter particles that come together in the strong magnetic
field to form many magnetic stalagmites in the bottom of the
wells of microplates. The tumbling action of these
stalagmites on our Magnetic Tumble Stirrers provides a very
efficient yet gentle stirring of the liquid
They also are useful
in stirring solutions with magnetic beads. Stirring in microwells
increases the exposure of magnetic beads to ligands in the
solution. The tumble powder is added to wells as a liquid slurry.

Some stirring operations require that the
stirrers be removed with out contaminating the liquid in
wells and preventing cross contamination between wells. We
have developed a system of MULTI-BLOT™ Replicators with
magnetic stainless steel pins that when used with a Magnetic
Block System will safely extract stirrers from both standard
microplates and deep well plates.
